what version you installed ?

the lubuntu in the download section is for arm not for atom/x86

the x86/atom version is droidmote-server-linux-v2.1.2.tar

if you installed this version, try in this mode to start the server:

sudo ./droidmote 2302 password

Version 2.1.2 doesn't work for me either.
I am running Lubuntu 16.04 on an Intel Compute Stick (Quad core Atom.)
Same symptoms. I tried to autosart it (run when LXDE comes up,) tried "sudo ./droidmote 2302 password &" and without sudo and all it does is connect. After that droidmote locks up, I lose keyboard, mouse still works (locally) so I can only reboot workstation.

the last server for linux is version 3.0.0

try the server before from a terminal emulator with root permissions if all work ok, after you can try the autostart on boot follow the readme inside.
